TEACHER: Kevin Lacroix
THEME: Everything is Ordinary. Nothing is Ordinary.
Kevin: In 2007, after having a minor stroke, I experienced expressive aphasia. I could understand others, but I couldn’t output language, spoken or written. It was terrifying, but thankfully I recovered within a few hours.
That night I called my mom to let her know what had happened, and to this day that conversation is one of the most extraordinary experiences I’ve ever had. Thoughts effortlessly transmuted into spoken words and sentences. What I would have completely taken for granted earlier that day was now miraculous, deeply rewarding, and yet still utterly ordinary.
It taught me that “ordinary” and “extraordinary” are fluid and conditional, not fixed qualities of any experience. They reflect how open we are to the present moment just as it is. Tonight, we’ll practice letting go of needing our experience to be any different than it is, simply welcoming what’s here and now.
