The Secret Life of Toys

TEACHER: Avi Craimer
THEME: The Secret Life of Toys

Avi: In the modern world we live with a deep fissure between matter and meaning. Matter is governed by the laws of physics, cause and effect. Meaning somehow comes from within ourselves, originating in the human mind or soul. In the most reductive version of this modernist story, all meaning is seen as a psychological projection onto an intrinsically meaningless physical world. Yet, there are experiences that cut through this divide, where matter becomes uncannily animated with meaning and meaning erupts from the wild density of matter. As children, the interplay of matter and meaning was not so rare. A beloved teddy bear has their own feelings and desires, a Halloween costume confers not just a different outer appearance but a transfiguration of identity, and a pair of red sneakers grants superpowers of speed and endurance. In this guided journey work session, we’ll explore the magic of childhood things which refuse to fit neatly into adult categories.
