End on a High Note

“Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.” ~ Jane Austin

Steph: As a kid, I played a lot of softball in the spring, and in our very first year playing, we didn’t win a single game, except the very last one. I still remember the joy and cheering from our team and supportive parents at our own shock and surprise that we actually won. Our jubilant celebration was marked with ice cream at the end, and in that moment, I loved softball, and went on to play at a high level for many years. (We did eventually win some more games in the years to come).
When moving through life, whether it’s a tough day, or a tough season, if we finish on a high note, we tend to view the entire experience more positively. This human psychological bias is known as the “Peak End Rule” and once we become aware of it, we can intentionally use it to our advantage to create more pleasure in our lives. In tonight’s meditation we will create our own Jars of Joy, that we can dip into anytime we need to finish on a positive note. We’ll end on our own high with a luxurious progressive relaxation body scan that will hopefully keep you “playing” at meditation for many more seasons.
