The Stuff of Thought

Avi: For most of my life, thinking meant speaking to myself in a clear strong inner voice which felt like “me”. Then after a shift in my practice in 2010, that inner voice largely disappeared and for a long time this was a traumatic loss. I felt as though I couldn’t think at all and it took years to adjust to thinking largely without self-talk. Amazingly (to me) cognitive science researchers have found that a significant minority of people never think in words to begin with. It turns out people can think in images, colours, space, movement, or really any way our neuro-cognitive systems can make meaning. Perhaps thinking is nothing more (or less) than the inner expression of meaning through some kind of subtle sensory medium. In tonight’s meditation, we’ll explore some of the diverse ways thinking can unfold.
